Mekelle, Tigray — The International Day of People with Disabilities was celebrated for the 34th time globally and 33rd time nationally in Mekelle, Tigray, with a strong emphasis on the theme, “Fostering a Disability Inclusive Society for Advancing Social Progress.” The two-day event brought together stakeholders from across Ethiopia, including disability associations, government bodies, and people living with disabilities.

The celebration featured a range of activities aimed at raising awareness and promoting inclusivity. Attendees participated in field visits to ongoing projects aimed at improving the lives of people with disabilities, alongside milestone-laying ceremonies to establish new disability centers. These new facilities are anticipated to serve as vital resources for individuals requiring support and assistance.

Exhibitions showcased innovative approaches to disability inclusion, while donations were made to enhance existing programs dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities. The event highlights the collective commitment to building a society that recognizes the rights and contributions of all its members.

One of the key contributors to the event was the Tigray Disabled Veterans Association, which played an active role in facilitating discussions and showcasing initiatives designed to empower individuals with disabilities. Their involvement underscores the importance of collaboration between various organizations and advocates to promote a more inclusive society.

This year’s celebration not only acknowledged the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities but also celebrated their resilience and potential. As the event concluded, participants left with renewed motivation to strive for an inclusive future where everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive.
